Seeking community and Connection, we watched the same
shows and discussed them over the fence, at a safe distance,
with neighbors or in Zoom Happy Hours. Netflix created the Netflix
Party enabling us to watch movies with friends. Streaming entered
our lexicon. We watched Bridgerton, The Crown, Tiger King, and in
celebration of the hugely popular Gothic genre, The Haunting of
Bly Manor. Painting parties went online with virtual “Sip and Paint”
events popping up. People returned to journaling and virtual book
clubs. World Reading Habits 2020 reports, “The global pandemic
has caused 35% of the world to read more with 14% of people
saying they read significantly more during this year.”
All of these indoor activities beckoned people out of doors.
People sought solace in nature, even if that nature was a row of
succulents in the window. Science supported this trend as another
facet of self-care, “Flora-filled window views can boost self-
esteem and happiness while reducing negative outcomes like
anxiety and loneliness.”—Molly Glick, Sierra Club.org.
